Wedding Websites 101

Weddings in the digital age have brought about a lot of new concepts - electronic invitations or save the dates, customised filters for your big day, and the one at hand - wedding websites.

Do you absolutely need one? No - but here are a few reasons to consider one:

It’s an easy way to disperse information

Every ounce of information your guests will need to know - in one place? Sounds good to me. It doesn’t matter if your guests leave their invites on the fridge or lose them, they know there’s one place they can go where they’ll have all the information they’ll need at their fingertips.

House venue information, registry details, travel details, accommodation recommendations and heaps more on your site to ensure your guests are in the know.

And likewise, a way to update this information

In the day + age of Covid, your plans might need to change rapidly. Or maybe you forgot to add that it might be cold and your guests should bring a jacket. Being able to update your wedding website and put every update in the same place is one less thing to worry about and easily accessible for the majority of your guests.

They’re customisable, easy and free!

Mostly. Some sites will charge after a certain amount of time or once you exceed a certain amount of pages, but most can be done on the cheap with little to no tech skills required! Better yet, match your site to your invitation suite for a completely cohesive look.

Track your RSVPS

When I got married, I enabled a form on my website that was essentially my guests’ RSVP - it included the number of people responding, their meal choice + dietary requirements, as well as a song request. And uploaded straight into a Google Sheet for me - a planner’s dream!

Include that little bit more

Put the extra things that you night not have room for on your invites - your favourite bars, restaurants, walks and other things to do for guests that might not know the area, or who are curious as to what you love. Include your love story, some info about the bridal party, or a timeline for the day to keep your guests in the know. Possibilities are endless!

And like anything - now let’s look at the not so cool stuff about wedding websites:

Your less tech-savvy guests might struggle

Those among your guest list who struggle to navigate technology may struggle to access or keep up to date with your website. You can’t rely that information will be fully taken in by every single guest, or you may need to help them out! Same goes with any updates made. Some may only look at it once and never again - so keep that in mind.

They can take time

Especially if you’re a bit of a perfectionist! And amongst everything else involved in the wedding planning process, it might not be at the top of your priority list.

What’re your thoughts? I’m definitely pro-website, but let me know your thoughts, and why! And if you need any suggestions for great website templates, I’m happy to point you in the right directions!

Happy planning!
